4 things to remember when choosing an LED light
Since the LED lights are available in thousands of models and in various price categories, selecting the right type of LED light for your application is not always a comfortable task. Your will definitely get confused of looking at different brands and specifications showcased in the market. If you are less aware of the selection criteria, your chances are more to get cheated by the sales person selling the LED lights. Design trends and technology are always changing due to the changing tastes of customers. So it’s really important for you to do your homework before start shopping the LED lights for your home or business.
Here are 4 tips for you to remember while choosing the LD lighting.
1. What is your application?
Lights are there everywhere. Every corner of the country needs lightings, Hospitals, hotels, office spaces, bar, parks, retails shops, warehouses, factories etc.
If you would want to buy the LED lights for your home application, you have to narrow down further to your specific application like bed room, dining area, living space, garden etc. A light of a particular model for dining area may not be good to fit in the bedroom space.
If it’s for the bedrooms, it would be good to have the lights with low illumination compares to the lights in the kitchen. Dimmable LED lights will be a good choice for bed rooms. Mirror light in the bathroom shall be of IP rated to avoid water ingress. Corridor should be illuminated brightly. If you have coving done on the ceiling, it would be beautiful if you can hide some RGB LED strips in the covings.
Office spaces needs to have better visibility for the employees since they deal with texts and documents. Lights with 90lm per watts is the nominal lumen that you can chose. There are linear pendant lights available for office use. It depends on the design of the office space, the type of mounting that you can chose.
Retail shops always to be lighted in such a way that it stands out to attract the attention of the customers. The lighting inside the retail shops will have to unveil the beauty of the products that are displayed. So the quality of LED light fixture is the most important factor here. Lighting plays a vital role in the marketing of the products that are shelved in the retail shops. Spot lights and track lights are widely used for display area of the products.
Warehouses and factories are constructed with huge area spaces. So high wattage high bay lights and flood lights are the best choices. And more over the approvals and certifications for these lights are very important as these lights will be operating in a harsh environment.
2. Types Of Lights
If your designer has already plotted the model of the lights which is best suitable for each spaces, then your job is half done. Or else you may have to decide on what type of light you need in terms of mounting. They are pendant light, down light, track light, tube light, ceiling light, panel light, flood light etc.
Some of them are explained here.
LED Down lights are very common and widely used in many applications like home, hospitals, hotels, offices etc. If you have low ceilings, flush mounted down lights are the best option. Its available ranging from 3w to 30w. depends on the amount of lights that you required, you can chose the wattage. The colour temperature also to be decided before chosing these lights. Down lights for a bedroom is likely to have the CCT of 2700K to 3000K, instead of putting a bright CCT light. Low CCT will give you a comfort light in the bed room if you need the lights to switch ON just after a nap. But for the corridors and common areas you may need to have the LED lights with higher CCT.
Pendant lights are the lights which is hung from the ceiling with solid wires. It’s installation is very simple and not required to have a lot of chisel work. There are many types of pendant lights available in the market. They are suitable for dining and living spaces.
LED track lights are widely used in retail shops and show rooms to illuminate the displayed products. The main advantage of track light is that the replacement is very easy. Once the track is fitted, you don’t need to work on the track installation or wiring for the purpose of adding a new light or replacing the lights. You need to decide on the CCT and wattage as well before buying the track light. Angle of light delivery is also to be taken care
LED Tube Lights are now a days more popular than fluorescent tube light. Energy saving is the major advantage of LED tube lights. It’s available in T5 and T8 sizes. Encapsulated LED tube light come with built-in driver in it. T8 20W LED tube light can give out the lumens of T8 36W FL tube light. Replacement LED tubes are available which can replace with existing FL tubes. You have to check the manufacture’s wiring diagrams before installing it. It doesn’t work together with existing ballast and starter. So you may need to isolate them.
3. Mounting methods
Different lights comes with different types of mounting arrangements. You need to assess the mounting location to find out the type of light that you can chose. Down lights comes with 2 nos spring loaded brackets which enable the light body to fit-in on the ceiling cut out. Pendent lights are not always suitable for fitting on the gypsum ceiling due to it’s weight. Tracks for LED track lights can be fit either on the concrete ceiling or gypsum ceiling. Surface mounted ceiling lights are available in the market which is suitable for mounting directly on the ceiling. LED tube lights usually fit on the wall. Except down light, all these arrangements required drilling of the wall/ceiling. So you need to ensure that the mounting location is suitable for easy drilling.
4. Common terminologies
CCT (Correlated colour temperature):
In normal terms, the CCT is the measure of colour of the light. The unit is Kelvin (K). CCT 2700K to 3000K is referred as warm white. This light gives us more yellowish colour. CCT 5000K to 6500K is referred as cool white or day light. This will give us a bright colour.
You need to choose the suitable CCT for the light that you wanted to buy.
CRI (Colour rendering index):
CRI is the measure of the ability of alight source to reveal the colours of objects effectively in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. It ranges from 0-100
CRI 90 – 100Ra Excellent
CRI 80 – 90Ra Good
CRI 60 – 80Ra Moderate
CRI < 60Ra Poor
Lumens per watts
The Lumens per Watt Metric is a measure is a ratio to assist you in determining the most energy efferent LED light Fixture. The Higher the amount of Lumens per Watt, The more energy efficient the LED Fixture is
In addition to check the wattage of the LED light, we need to ask about how many Lumens/Watt it can deliver.
Power factor in an AC circuit is a measure of efficiency of the power delivered. In simple terms, an LED driver with power factor=1 delivers 100% efficiency. Less in power factor refers less efficient and wasting the energy.
All IP Ratings have two digits. The first digit (0-6) refers the protection against solid objects, while the second digit (0-8) refers the protection against liquid objects. A fully waterproof LED lighting product will have a number of IP68, which means it can be submerged into water for indefinite periods of time. Normal outdoor lightings can be of IP65/IP66
COB and SMD chips:
COB (Chips on Board), is a new technology of LED packaging for LED light engine. Multi LED chips are packaged together as one lighting module. When it light up, it looks like a lighting panel.
An SMD An SMD LED Module (surface-mount device light-emitting diode module) is a type of LED module that uses surface-mount technology (SMT) to mount LED chips on printed circuit boards (PCB)
